* Biden and Putin spoke for a little over an hour in a high-stakes telephone call on Saturday as tensions mount 

* The US president warned his counterpart of 'swift and severe' costs if he pushed ahead with invading Ukraine 

* But he also said it was not too late for a diplomatic solution to a crisis that has taken Europe to the brink of war 

* Earlier, an intelligence report warned that Putin wants to invade Ukraine on Wednesday 

* US Embassy in Kiev will suspend all consular services starting on Sunday as diplomatic staff evacuate 

* Polish and US officials are scouting sites for fortified border control points along the frontier with Ukraine 

* Russian diplomat Sergey Lavrov accused US of waging 'propaganda campaign' on call with Antony Blinken 

* It comes as Putin launched military drills in Belarus on Saturday, alongside a major sea drill in the Black Sea 

* And the Pentagon denied Moscow's claims that a US Navy submarine of violated Russian waters in the Pacific 

* Growing list of countries urge citizens to leave Ukraine, including Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Belgium

President Joe Biden told Vladimir Putin on Saturday morning that Russia would face 'swift and severe' economic and political costs if it invaded Ukraine, amid frantic efforts to persuade Moscow to pull back from the brink. 

The two leaders held an hour-long conversation a day after US officials said they believed Putin could launch an invasion at any time, and as American diplomats began leaving the embassy in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. 

'President Biden was clear that, if Russia undertakes a further invasion of Ukraine, the United States together with our Allies and partners will respond decisively and impose swift and severe costs on Russia,' said the White House after the call finished.

US-built first Saudi MMSC frigate HMS Saud launched at Fincantieri’s shipyard

According to information published by the Saudi Ministry of Defense on December 18, 2025, the first Multi-Mission Surface Combatant frigate constructed in the United States for the Royal Saudi Navy has been officially launched at Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin. The ship, designated HMS Saud with pennant number 820 and also known as Jalalat Al-Malik Saud in honor of King Saud, is the lead vessel in a four-ship program ordered under Project Tuwaiq through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales framework, a deal that defense officials have repeatedly described as a cornerstone of bilateral naval cooperation.
