A state of emergency has been declared in Ontario after the Biden administration urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government to use its federal powers to end the Freedom Convoy demonstrations blockading key border crossings to protest Canada's COVID-19 restrictions. 

Conservative Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Friday declared a 42-hour state of emergency, threatening vehicle seizures, fines of C$100,000 ($79,000), jail time of up to a year, and suspension of commercial licenses to punish protesters who do not comply with orders to disperse.

'This is a pivotal moment for our nation. The eyes of the world upon us right now, and what they are seeing is not who we are, this is not what Canada is about,' said Ford at a briefing. 'As a province, as a nation, we must collectively draw a line.'

WNU Editor: I always find it weird to see a political leader come-out and say that to preserve our right to protest, his government is going to legislate draconian measures to impose massive fines and jail terms to stop a protest.

US-built first Saudi MMSC frigate HMS Saud launched at Fincantieri’s shipyard

According to information published by the Saudi Ministry of Defense on December 18, 2025, the first Multi-Mission Surface Combatant frigate constructed in the United States for the Royal Saudi Navy has been officially launched at Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin. The ship, designated HMS Saud with pennant number 820 and also known as Jalalat Al-Malik Saud in honor of King Saud, is the lead vessel in a four-ship program ordered under Project Tuwaiq through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales framework, a deal that defense officials have repeatedly described as a cornerstone of bilateral naval cooperation.
