Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson Pulls Out Of UK Conservative Leadership Race

Daily Mail: 'It would simply not be the right thing to do': Boris Johnson will NOT stand in Tory leadership contest because of need to 'unite' party, meaning Rishi Sunak could be crowned Britain's next PM tomorrow with Penny Mordaunt short of 100 backer threshold

* Boris Johnson was publicly-backed by 57 MPs, but tonight claimed that he had reached 102 nominations

* He said he is 'well placed to deliver Conservative victory in 2024', but return 'simply not the right thing to do'

* Rishi Sunak, who launched his campaign today, is understood to have been publicly backed by 147 MPs

* He is expected to become new Prime Minister as Penny Mordaunt understood to be short of 100 supporters

* It comes after the former PM unsuccessfully reached out to his two main rivals in an attempt to make a pact

The former PM tonight said continuing his bid to return to No10 was 'simply not the right thing to do' after unsuccessfully reaching out to his two main rivals in an attempt to make a pact.

But both Mr Sunak and Ms Mordaunt turned down an alliance, with Penny insisting 'I'm in it to win it'.
