Italy could add thousands of low-cost precision interceptors to its counter-drone arsenal after the U.S. State Department approved a possible $364 million sale of 5,031 air-to-air APKWS II guidance sections on August 21, 2026. The package would give Italian forces a more economical way to engage large numbers of drones and other low-end aerial threats without relying on scarce, expensive air-to-air missiles.
