North Korea Tests Ballistic Missile That Flies 700 Km Days Before US South Korea Military Exercise

North Korea fired a ballistic missile from the Wonsan area on its east coast Wednesday, sending the weapon about 700 kilometers before it fell into waters east of the Korean Peninsula. The launch marks Pyongyang’s second ballistic missile test in six days as U.S. and South Korean forces prepare for a major annual military exercise. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the launch at about 6 a.m. local time on August 12, while Japanese authorities assessed that the missile landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, with no reported damage. Seoul has not yet publicly identified the specific missile type, although its roughly 700-kilometer range is generally associated with short-range ballistic missiles. The launch comes five days before the United States and South Korea begin the 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise on August 17. Read more.
