Modern Farmer: One-Third of Ukraine’s Farmland Won’t Be Cultivated or Harvested This Year

The vast devastation of crops and infrastructure due to the war is threatening the country’s food security. Agriculture is central to Ukraine’s economy.

The nation hosts 42 million hectares of agricultural land, and it is one of the world’s largest wheat exporters. But disrupted by the turbulence of war, the country is facing a deteriorating food production industry, resulting in supply-chain shortages.

With a lack of inputs—including fertilizer— needed for successful crop yields, plus labor shortages, Ukraine is struggling with food insecurity.

According to a statement the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) released on Tuesday, $115.4 million in donations to the region’s agriculture industry is necessary to prevent further disruptions to the food chain supply and worsening food insecurity across the nation.
