Who Is Russia's Top Commander In Ukraine?

CNN: Who is Russia's top field commander in Ukraine? The US isn't sure.

Washington (CNN)The US has been unable to determine if Russia has designated a military commander responsible for leading the country's war in Ukraine, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter — something that current and former defense officials say is likely a key contributor to the apparent clumsiness and disorganization of the Russian assault.

Without a top, theater-wide commander on the ground in or near Ukraine, units from different Russian military districts operating in different parts of Ukraine appear to be competing for resources rather than coordinating their efforts, according to two US defense officials.

Units participating in different Russian offensives across Ukraine have failed to connect, these sources say, and in fact, appear to be acting independently with no overarching operational design.

Update: US unable to determine Russian commander leading war in Ukraine: report (The Hill)

WNU Editor: I am sure the Pentagon and US intelligence knows who is the top Russian commander in Ukraine. But here is my take on who is in charge.

There are five military districts in Russia (link here). There are two military districts that border Ukraine. The Western military district (link here), and the Southern military district (link here).

The Southern military district is commanded by an Army General (Aleksandr Dvornikov), he outranks the commander of the Western military district who is a Colonel General (Alexander Zhuravlyov). It will be one of these two generals who will be the top commander in Ukraine.

There is also the possibility that both Generals are in command in Ukraine. The Western district commander being responsible for the northern campaign in Ukraine, and the Southern district commander being responsible for the eastern and southern campaign. And both of them being answerable to Chief of the General Staff, General of the Army Valery Gerasimov (link here).

Russia's flag flutters in front of the embassy building in Tallinn, Estonia. Copyright RAIGO PAJULA / AFP, FILE   RFE: Bulgaria Expels 10 Russian Diplomats, Baltics Follow Suit With Another 10 Expulsions   Bulgaria is expelling 10 Russian diplomats saying they were carrying out activities deemed incompatible with their diplomatic status, a move followed up quickly by the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.  The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on March 18 that it had given the 10 diplomats 72 hours to leave. The statement did not give a more detailed reason for the expulsions, but since Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, the Russian ambassador in Sofia has repeatedly made contradictory statements about Bulgaria's position on the conflict. The ministry also did not say who was included on the list of people being expelled.   Read more ....  WNU Editor: With tensions being as high as they are right now, expect ...
