Belgian Armed Forces Conduct First Seizure of Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker in North Sea

Belgian armed forces have intercepted and seized the oil tanker Ethera in the North Sea in what officials describe as a coordinated interdiction supported by France, marking Belgium’s first direct confiscation of a vessel linked to Russia’s shadow fleet. The action represents a shift from administrative penalties and monitoring toward operational maritime enforcement, underscoring growing European resolve to curb sanctioned Russian energy exports. By physically diverting and detaining the vessel at sea, Belgium has transformed sanctions policy into a visible show of naval and coast guard capability in one of Europe’s busiest shipping corridors.
