An aerial view of buildings destroyed by Israeli airstrikes in the Jabalia camp for Palestinian refugees in Gaza City on Oct. 11, 2023. Yahya Hassouna | AFP   Washington Post: Israel and Hamas reach tentative U.S.-brokered deal to pause conflict, free dozens of hostages   Israel, the United States and Hamas have agreed to a tentative deal that would free dozens of women and children held hostage in Gaza, in exchange for a five-day pause in fighting.  The release, which could begin within the next several days — barring last-minute hitches — could lead to the first sustained pause in conflict in Gaza, according to people familiar with its provisions.  Under the terms of a detailed, six-page agreement, all parties to the conflict would freeze combat operations for at least five days while an initial 50 or more hostages are released in smaller batches every 24 hours. It was not immediately clear how many of the 239 people believed to be in captivity in Gaza would ...

Was Anything Accomplished At The Joe Biden-Xi Jinping Summit?

Image: Shutterstock.com.   National Interest: The Joe Biden-Xi Jinping Summit: Nothing Accomplished?   Despite Washington and Beijing’s apparent satisfaction with the meeting, the tensions at the heart of the relationship show no signs of abating.   After meeting on the sidelines of the APEC summit in San Franciso on November 15, Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping (separately) announced several agreements that reflect their shared interest in reducing U.S.-China tensions. They agreed to resume military-to-military exchanges at both senior and operational levels. They also agreed to improve cooperation on counternarcotics, primarily aimed at ending the flow of Chinese-origin fentanyl into the United States. In addition, Washington and Beijing will expand dialogue on addressing the potential risks of artificial intelligence, continue to hold working-level consultations on a wider range of bilateral issues, and seek to increase educational and cultural exchanges b...

No U.S. Aid To Ukraine Until (Maybe) Next Month

Bloomberg : Ukraine Aid From US Won’t Be Approved for a Month, Maybe Longer   New US aid for Ukraine risks slipping to mid-December and maybe longer, casting doubt on Washington’s ability to keep up the flow of weapons that both the Biden administration and the Ukrainian government say is vital.  Ukraine’s congressional backers are engaged in a tough battle over an expansive aid package whose fate is now enmeshed in a partisan fight over border policies and torn from must-pass bills that would prompt swift action.  The soonest Congress could complete negotiations and pass new Ukraine assistance is mid-December, nearly two months after President Joe Biden first requested $61 billion for the country in its war against Russia. The US has begun restricting the flow of military assistance because of the wait, according to a Defense Department spokeswoman.   Read more ....   WNU Editor : I still believe a US aid package to Ukraine will be approved in th...

U.S. President Biden Floats A Gavin Newsom Presidency

SFGate: Joe Biden floats Gavin Newsom presidency at APEC welcome reception in San Francisco   President Joe Biden led off his remarks at an APEC welcome reception in San Francisco on Wednesday evening by semi-jokingly floating a future Gavin Newsom presidency.  “I want to talk about Gov. Newsom. Want to thank him,” Biden said at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, according to a transcript released by the White House.  “He’s been one hell of a governor, man. Matter of fact, he could be anything he wants. He could have the job I’m looking for.”  Newsom, the governor of California, has for years been a rumored presidential candidate. Those rumors have subsided slightly in recent months, as Newsom has taken on more of a surrogate role for Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign. But even a full-throated endorsement of Biden hasn’t fully killed off the presumption that Newsom is waiting in the wings, either as a 2024 last-minute replacement, or for a full-fledged...

Are Ukraine's Frontlines Breaking?

Pepe Escobar, Strategic Culture : Evidence keeps piling up, via leaked reports, of an across-the-board breakdown in the Ukrainian frontlines.   Previously, we focused on the southern Zaporozhye front. Now let’s focus on Kharkov, in the northeast.   The attached document, fully verified for authenticity, is a July report to the Chief of Staff of the operational-tactical group “Sumy”.  The report essentially says that it’s impossible to withdraw two thirds of the A7383 unit from the battlefield to recover combat readiness because the remaining one third is incapable of holding the fort – which happens to extend along 55.5 km.  Read more ....   WNU Editor : Conflicts like the Russia - Ukraine war where both sides are not willing to compromise to end the war do take a long time to resolve itself. I Needed A Break Tonight

WNU Editor: It has been a rough three years.  Pandemic restrictions. The Russia - Ukraine war that has engulfed my family and friends on both sides. What Should We Expect From Today's Biden - Xi Meeting?

Xi and Biden meet amid a fracturing world order © Kevin Lamarque/Reuters    Ishaan Tharoor, Washington Post: Xi and Biden meet amid a fracturing world order    There’s a lot riding on the meeting between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping when the two convene at a summit of Pacific rim nations on Wednesday. Both leaders will face each other after months of tensions and anticipation. There have been angry barbs tossed over the future of Taiwan and stealthy balloons sent over the North American landmass. Beijing fulminates over a legacy of U.S. global “hegemony” and styles itself as a champion of a different kind of international order.
